Perseverence and hard work ultimately allowed him to have his sound reach outside his hometown city limits, the rest of the country and even abroad (US, Asia & more).

Initially influenced by family, and more notably an elder cousin who was already prominant within the local scene, Malish showed an early passion for the culture. After stumbling onto his sisters copy of “He’s the dj, I’m the rapper” by Fresh Prince and DjJazzy Jeff, things were never the same. Loving the expression, energy, and humourdisplayed on the album, he recalls being drawn to the music at a very young age. A couple years later the emcee was crowned freestyle champion by winning a Quebec wide talent search aired live on National television. The increase in attention allowed him and his group at the time “Offsides“, to release a handful of vinyls (Heavy MTL,Take Off, 2def and Turn it up). A couple of albums were also released across Canada, “Offsides – Foul Language”, and his solo effort “Music start’swith M” allowing Offides aka Odoublef to tour across Canada to sold out shows in Taipei.

Not one to stay idle, the constantly inspired Malish also independently released a slew of mixtapes. In an attempt to give back to his supporters and showcase his cultivated and improved beat making skills, Malicious released a series of mixtapes called Life’s Not So Sample 1 and 2. (download here) Both included original music along with popular instrumentals all in the idea of sampling, recreating and sharing stories of life through his eyes.

LNSS1 and LNSS2 managed to succesfully introuduce the rest of the world to an artist many north of the border had witnessed putting in work for NICE with the beats, NICE with rhymes and depending on who you ask NICE in person, the irony is how did he end up with a name like Malicious?

 Video of choice:

“Under the Vultures”

Life’s Not So Sample 3

The third mixtape in the series Nella (Montreal/L.A.)
Fast forward years later to when he bought his first album, Nas‘ Illmatic. Songs like “It ain’t hard to tell” and Naughty by Nature‘s “O.P.P.” were instrumental (pun intended) for this emcee/producer.

Hearing popular Jackson 5 songs cut up, sampled and used in a way he

never heard before, Malish had only one question “How can I get into a studio and get involved?” His big cousin (R-Kade) noticed his desire for music and helped with his request by bringing him to his studio sessions which later opened the door for Malish to get on the mic.

sometime. Critics embraced the return of the raw, candid sound displayed on both projects
