It’s been said that you’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. So look around you and take an inventory check. These people either do one of three things to your life; add, subtract or keep you stationary. That’s why it’s important to surround yourself with go-getters and people who inspire you to be better. It helps you grow as an individual. This is particularly important when you’re trying to run a business.
A lot of people, especially in the music business, have inflated egos and are shortsighted about this. They surround themselves with “yes men” or people who have no capacity to make decisions for themselves. These people must always be told exactly what to do, and often still somehow they manage to fuck that up.
I’ve had to make these kinds of adjustments to in my own life. This is not to be mistaken for friendship. True friendships are irreplaceable, matters of business and career advancement are different. Which is why sometimes the two don’t mix.
You can’t know everything and surrounding yourself with creative thinkers helps to increase the inflow of knowledge needed to move you closer to your goals. If you’re always the smartest person in your group, then it’s time to meet some new people or find a new group. Success and motivation can be contagious so make a push to put yourself in the company with those who have achieved some of the success you’re after.
