Kill The Record Labels is a film released earlier this month about the alleged assault on hip hop by the record labels. The buzz about this movie has been around for a while, but I didn’t want to do a post about it without seeing it first.
What do I think about it? I think it’s worth the money I spent on it. With this film, you get straight-forward information about what’s happening today with the mixtape game, record labels, and independent artists. Some of the most educational commentary comes from the legendary DJ’s who made mixtapes the ingredient that fueled and sustained the growth of hip hop.
This film sheds light on the record industry’s aggressive tactics to shut down any profits made by the distribution of these unauthorized mixtapes. What I like about this film, is that it’s balanced. It discusses how and why hip hop could have been responsible for bringing this unwanted attention on itself. It’s a well produced work and should be viewed by anyone in the independent hip hop game.
It comes on DVD but you can pay for a download from the website. I went for download. It’ definitely worth the 5 bucks I spent on it.
