Hailing from Carson, California, Independent hip hop artist, Curtiss King, raps, sings and produces. He calls his sound Blog-Hop because of how hip hop is now spread in this digital age.
1. What inspired you to get into hip hop?
CK: Simply put the freedom and opportunity Hip Hop presented was all the inspiration I needed to be apart of it. I was basically born into both my parents playing everything from De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, to even Ice Cube and Eazy-E. However when I first started rapping myself I mostly listened to Outkast, 2Pac, and Busta Rhymes and just sat in amazement at the freedom you were allowed in the genre as an emcee. And you mean to tell me that if I say something dope or thought provoking enough I can make a living at this? I was hooked.
2. If you were a super hero, what powers would you choose and what would be your name?
CK: You know what? I just peeped the movie Jumper for the first time and I was thinking what would be doper than to teleport anywhere in the world at any damn time? You know how many features I could do teleporting from session to session? Plus I produce and some rappers try to be slick and jack instrumentals and I gotta track them down. So yeah my super hero name would be The Tracker. Lol.
3. If you could deck a famous person in public and get away with it, who would it be?
CK: Prince, in a Minnesota club circa 1984 would have to got decked. I mean, you ever hear the saying that something is done so great it makes you wanna slap your mama? Well Prince was playing about 20 instruments at that time and was just such a ridiculously talented musician he makes me want to slap him. No hands on moms tho, I don’t care what the saying is.
4. If you were approached to do a reality show, what whould be the name of it?
CK: The name of the show would be “Waiting on My Spaceship” and Soul II Soul’s “Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)” would be the theme song. It would be a show that would highlight the extremes between my exciting weekends on the rise as a Hip Hop artist and my mediocre week days at my 9-5.
5. Your girl caught you leaving the theater with another girl, give me your best lie.
CK: I don’t know if I even lie in that situation because there would be nothing you could say to make her feel otherwise. So I would probably have to knock some random shit over and break. Lol. Like a trash bin or one of those movie posters on the side of the theater would fall victim before I break.
6. What do you love and hate about hip hop?
CK: I will always love the thrill and energy I get from Hip Hop when things are fresh, new, and creative. Like when I put together and finished my last album The Storm On Mars I swear to you it felt like the very first time I rapped on a tape deck and heard it back. The thrill and energy of performing will always be a love of mine as well, especially when the people are equally as passionate about your music as you are. I hate the fact that there are so many random people now without an ounce of love or business savvy using Hip Hop and or trying to redefine it to fit their subpar music. Just make great music and I’m happy.
7. What’s the dopest shit about your city?
CK: Well my original city Carson is just a melting pot of emcees with unique musical styles and lyricism. Carson is often overlooked because Compton and Long Beach are neighboring markets with bigger and longer standing reputations. However Carson if given the chance will be a breath of fresh air to West Coast Hip Hop. Also I recently moved out 40 miles east to the Inland Empire and I must say the dopest shit about this city is the artists that I’ve come across are not afraid to push the boundaries of Hip Hop. I’ve been blessed to be apart of two super creative cities and here I am.
